Raising a Roof for the Next Generation
For nearly 40 years, the Quadra Children’s Centre has been part of the fabric of this island.
Many people know it as the Quadra Children’s Centre. Its formal name is the Phil Thompson Memorial Day Care Society. Phil was beloved by the children of Quadra and he cared deeply for them in return.
More Than a Child Care Program
For generations of families, the Centre has been a place where children are welcomed, nurtured, and encouraged to grow, a place where friendships begin, confidence takes root, and children take some of their earliest steps into community life.
The Centre has never been just a building.
It has been a place of creativity and (controlled) chaos: muddy boots, forest walks, snack times, big feelings, small hands, handmade art, laughter, and learning through play. It is a place where children are known and cared for, families are supported, and educators bring skill, patience, imagination, and heart to their work every day.
For four decades, this Centre has helped make life on Quadra possible for families.
And for four decades, the community has helped make the Centre possible.
A Centre Sustained by Community
Like many island organizations, the Quadra Children’s Centre has been sustained by more than parent fees and government funding. It has been supported by families, neighbours, local businesses, volunteers, board members, educators, and donors who understand that when children are cared for, the whole community is stronger.
That history matters.
Today, the Centre is proud to be part of the $10-a-day child care program. This has made an enormous difference for families, helping make quality child care more accessible and affordable.
But affordable child care does not mean the Centre no longer needs its community.
Buildings still age. Roofs still wear out. Maintenance still needs to happen. Long-term planning still matters. While public funding is deeply appreciated, it is not something any small community organization can take for granted forever. If we want this place to serve Quadra’s children and families for another 40 years, we need to continue investing in it today.
Now, It’s Time to Raise the Roof
Right now, one of the Centre’s most urgent needs is replacing the roofs on its buildings.
After 40 years of caring for Quadra’s children, it is time to care for the place that makes that care possible. A safe, well-maintained building may not be the most visible part of the work, but it is essential to ensuring children continue to have a welcoming place to learn and grow.
The Centre that serves children today is the result of decades of care, planning, and community support. It is now our turn to carry that stewardship forward and ensure future generations have access to the same welcoming, reliable place for care and early learning.
Double Your Impact
We are especially grateful to Java Roofing! Their generosity has helped turn this project into a true community effort. Java Roofing is helping complete this essential work and matching donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000, doubling the impact of every gift.
Every contribution helps raise the roof over a place that has meant so much to this community.
If the Quadra Children’s Centre has touched your family, supported your neighbours, cared for someone you love, helped make work possible, or simply matters to you as part of a healthy island community, now is a meaningful time to give.
This Centre has always been sustained by community care.
Together, we can raise a roof and help carry it forward.
