Rough and Tumble Play

Sometimes the children display a desire to engage in rough and tumble type play. This is obvious when we observe children grabbing, pulling, pushing and chasing each other. As a facilitator, it is important to listen to the children and trust them to know their own needs and set their own limits (of course within reason). When the children are particularly engaged in this type of play, we get out the mats and monitor one to one wrestling matches. During this activity, children learn to cooperate, take turns, share, develop leadership skills, as well as to control impulses and aggressive behaviour. They practice self control and regulate themselves, coming to terms with and building upon their own strengths and abilities. All this while having a total blast!
