Island Cookery Fundraiser
Island Cookery History
Island Cookery was first printed in 1981, a homegrown fundraiser for Quadra Island “nursery school” by Quadra Island Child Care Society. Dedicated to the children of Quadra Island, the cookbook was compiled and created by “nursery school parents”, featuring recipes from a wide range of Quadra Islanders. Island Cookery (Vol. I) was entitled Seafood Specialties & All-time Favourites, and largely focused on Quadra’s ocean bounty. Its popularity led to a reprint, and, ten years later, Island Cookery II - More All-time Favourites from Quadra Island, published in 1991. A third volume always seemed like a possibility, but this time, two decades have gone by before a new generation of Island Cookery enthusiasts joined to make it a reality.
Guidelines for submissions to Island Cookery III
First off, we want to welcome any and all favourite recipes by local Quadra Island cooking enthusiasts. That said, it seems right to let you know that the cookbook compiling process has always involved a whittling down, and we will almost certainly be unable to include all recipe submissions. (Island Cookery I described testing over 600 recipes, resulting in a published 215). There are a LOT of great cookbooks in the world today, plus the whole new world of recipes you can just search on the internet. So we ask that you consider, in this process, what makes a Quadra recipe? Is it the local island ingredients? The classic island tradition? Is it passed down from Quadra people with deep island roots? Is it representative of Quadra Island “culture” - and what does that mean to you? Is there quirky island humour involved? Please let these questions guide and inspire you — not limit you! And please know that we would love to hear any history, or interesting descriptions of your recipes, and why they mean “Island Cookery” to you.
